Cookie Policy

This policy explains how this website uses cookies and similar technologies. It applies to trafllicom.com and to the pages hosted on it. It describes what cookies are, which categories this site uses, and how you can control them.

Traflicom is an English-language information and advisory portal for Finland. The pages you read here cover vehicle registration, traffic rules and the practical steps that sit around them. This page covers only the small files your browser stores while you read those pages.

Cookies

What cookies are

Plain definition first, then the parts that matter when you manage them.

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They allow the site to recognize your browser, remember preferences, and, where applicable, produce statistics about how pages are used. They do not by themselves identify you by name.

Similar technologies are grouped under the same word in this policy. Local storage, session storage and small identifiers written by browser scripts behave in much the same way as the files themselves, so when this page refers to cookies, it also covers those. What they have in common is a browser-side record: something written on your device, read back later by the page that wrote it or by the service that provided it.

The distinction that matters is duration. Session cookies disappear when you close the browser, and they exist so that a single visit is handled coherently — form input is kept while you move between steps, and the page you were reading is remembered if you refresh. Persistent cookies stay longer, usually with an expiry date set when they are written, and they allow a site to remember a setting or a light preference between visits.

A cookie written by the site you are visiting is called a first-party cookie. One written by another provider whose function is embedded on the page is a third-party cookie. Both are described in this policy, and the next section sets out what our pages actually use.

Two categories

Categories used on this site

The site may use strictly necessary cookies required for basic functions such as form submission and page navigation. It may also use analytical cookies that help understand which pages are read and how visitors move between them. Where non-essential cookies are used, they are used to improve the content rather than to profile individual visitors.

Strictly necessary
These keep the site working. They carry the state of a form while it is being completed, remember the choice you made about non-essential cookies, and let pages load in the order you asked for them. Blocking this category can stop parts of the site from behaving correctly.
Analytical
These help us understand which pages are read and how visitors move between them: whether a guide was opened from the home page, whether a visitor continued to a related topic, whether a page holds attention. The figures are read in aggregate, so an individual visit is not singled out. Nothing here profiles a named visitor.
Not used here
Marketing or advertising cookies that build a cross-site profile are not part of how this portal works. If that ever changes for a specific feature, the change is reflected on this page before the feature ships.

Your controls

Managing cookies

You can accept, refuse, or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may prevent parts of the site, such as the contact form, from working correctly. Instructions for cookie management are available in the help section of most browsers.

The controls live in the browser, not on this page. That means one setting covers every site you visit in that browser, including this one.

  1. 1

    Open your browser settings

Look for the section that covers privacy, security, or site data. In most browsers this is one or two clicks from the main menu, and it usually lists stored cookies by site.

  2. 2

    Choose what to keep

You can clear everything, clear only trafllicom.com, or leave the list alone and let cookies expire on their own schedule. There is no penalty for refusing the analytical category.

  3. 3

    Check that pages still work

After a change, open a form you were using and confirm it submits. If a page behaves oddly, allow cookies for this site only and reload it once.

Embedded providers

Third-party services

Where third-party services are embedded or used for site functions, those providers may set their own cookies subject to their own policies. This site does not control those cookies; their handling is governed by the respective provider's terms.

In practice this means that a page you open here could load a component that a provider delivers from its own domain. The provider may write a cookie at that moment, and its purpose, duration, and contents are set by its own policy — a document that sits outside ours and may change without notice to us.

Two practical notes. First, if you refuse all cookies at the browser level, an embedded component may not load at all, and the page around it will still be fully readable. Second, if you want to know what a specific provider does, its own privacy or cookie page is the correct source — we cannot amend, extend, or remove records it writes from its own infrastructure.

Versioning

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated if the site's use of cookies changes. The current version is the one published on this page.

A revision usually follows a concrete change: a new function is added, a provider is replaced, a category is dropped. When that happens, the text on this page is rewritten rather than appended to, so the description always matches what the site actually does at the time you read it.

If you need to know which version applied on a particular date, or you are reviewing the site for a procurement or compliance check, write to us using the details alongside and say what you need.
